Can expats buy property in London?
Question by Mara: Can expats buy property in London?
I read somewhere that only citizens of the UK can buy homes/property in the UK. Is this true? What happens to Americans who move to London?
Also, if there is a way around – what is a typical monthly maintenance fee for a London flat?
…I mean the fee you would have to pay that goes towards the residential building you live in (such as building upkeep etc.). In US we call this “strata fees”.

Not true. Provided they are legally in the UK anybody can buy a home.
Most Americans who work in London rent a home in the suburbs and commute to work, just like the locals do. It makes no sense to buy a home unless you plan an extended stay because of the fees incurred.
The maintenance fee can vary widely depending on how much the maintenance company does. A typical figure would be about £50 per month. Sadly most maintenance companies provide a poor service so try asking the neighbours before you sign anything.
