Edinburgh: St Andrew Square

Originally a fashionable square surrounded by private houses occupied by famous names such as David Hume and Adam Ferguson. Gradually the private homes were replaced by banks and insurance company offices, making this Edinburgh’s financial heart. Many offices now lie empty.
The shared gardens were originally created in 1770. They have now been remodelled as a publicly available space complete with coffee shop.
The Melville Monument is a 41m high column to politician Henry Dundas (Lord Melville) dating 1820-3 and designed by William Burn.
