Situations has changed, wardrobe no longer fits station?
Question by Sweetpea: Situations has changed, wardrobe no longer fits station?
My husband lost his job some time ago, and his new one pays much less. Before this occured, we made decent money, and I was able to furnish myself a wardrobe of nice, middle end designer clothes (Banana Republic, J crew, Ralph Lauren) granted, most of them came off clearance racks or ebay, but still.
Now, we can’t realy afford anything, and it was recently suggested that I sell my nice clothes, buy cheaper ones, and use the remainder of the money for bills.
I don’t want to. I don’t want ot buy shabby crap. The clothes I have are still perfectly fine, and I don’t think I would get a price for them that would make it worth it.
Am I selfish to persist in wearing my clothes, that I already own, when we don’t actually fit in that tax bracket anymore?
I honestly thought it wouldn’t matter, but man, I have been getting so much flack, from so many people.!

Never mind what people say…..
Remember, you get what you pay for.
Wear the clothes…Good clothes will last a long time and wear well.
If you buy cheap, it looks cheap and doesn’t wear well.
Good Luck…we are all in the same boat!

Some people are very self-centered, patronizing, and self-important. They want to make themselves feel better by putting other people down in the place that they feel they deserve (always far lower than they are themselves). If such people make personal comments, tell them that you don’t feel comfortable discussing such private matters with them. And if they pursue the matter, ask they why they feel they have the right to demand and/or know such information. And if they volunteer any suggestions that you donate your clothing and wear the clothing approved of for the “work house”, thank them for their suggestions and tell them that you will take their suggestions under advisement. Then ignore them and refuse to discuss the matter any further!
As for your clothing, you bought it fair and square and you have the right to wear it no matter what anyone else thinks or says. And better quality clothing is apt to last longer as it is better made and out of better material. Cheap clothing is false economy as it often has to be replaced more often and it looks shabby far sooner than an article that was more expensive. Don’t feel badly for keeping and wearing your clothes. This is not selfish of you at all.
And even if you did sell your clothing, you would only get a fraction of what it cost you in the first place, and you may not even be left with enough to buy a replacement wardrobe, much less have anything left over for bills. See their ploys for what it is…to make you look shabby so they can look down on you and feel better in comparison! Also, if you look shabby, it will be far harder to get a job. No one wants to hire the dirt poor! Hold your head up high and ignore those that want to put you down! Take care!
